SSA Verification Guide
What Match and No Match results mean.
A Match is strong evidence about the data. A No Match is a signal to investigate. This is how to read each result and what to do next.

What Match and No Match actually mean.
SSA verification returns a clear result, but the interpretation matters. A Match is strong evidence about the data. A No Match is a signal to investigate, not a conclusion about the borrower.
- SubmitName, Date of Birth and Social Security Number as they appear on the application.
- ConsentThe borrower's signed Form SSA-89 authorizes the check.
- ComparedName, Date of Birth and SSN are compared with SSA records. If SSA records indicate the number holder is deceased, the response can include a death indicator.
- ResultA Match or No Match result is returned, typically through our service in about 15 minutes.
How it works
Three data elements. One government-source comparison.
The check is not about any single field. It is about whether the three submitted elements belong together in the records of the agency that issued the number.
A Match confirms the data relationship — not the physical identity of the person presenting it.
Reading the result
What each outcome supports.
| Result | What SSA is telling you | What it does not prove | Reasonable next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Match | The Name, Date of Birth and SSN combination agrees with SSA records | That the applicant is authentically the holder of that SSN | Retain the result and continue normal review |
| No Match | One or more submitted elements does not agree with SSA records | That fraud occurred | Check the data, correct ordinary errors and reverify |
| Persistent No Match | Submitted data continues not to reconcile after correction | Why the mismatch exists | Escalate for investigation |
| Death indicator | SSA records indicate the number holder is deceased | That fraud automatically occurred | Stop normal processing and investigate |
Most No Match results we see are not fraud. They are a maiden name, a transposed digit, or a date entered day-first. Working those explanations first is faster, and it avoids treating a clerical error as an accusation.
Questions
SSA verification questions.
What exactly does a Match confirm?
That the submitted Name, Date of Birth and Social Security Number agree with Social Security Administration records, and that the number does not appear on the Death Master Index. It confirms the data matches the issuing agency's record. It does not establish that the person presenting the information is the legitimate holder of that identity.
How should I work a No Match?
Treat it as a signal to investigate rather than a verdict. Start with the mundane explanations: a transposed digit, a middle name entered as a first name, a married name never reported to the SSA, a date of birth typed in the wrong format. Re-verify with corrected data. If it still returns No Match with data you are confident in, escalate it as a genuine finding.
How can SSA verification help identify synthetic or mismatched identity data?
Because it tests all three elements together against the issuing agency. Synthetic identity fraud uses a real, valid Social Security Number attached to a fabricated name and date of birth. A number-validity check passes. A credit-file check may pass, because the synthetic identity has been cultivated. Verification against SSA records does not, because the name and date of birth were never associated with that number.
What is the Death Master Index check?
A screening against the record of numbers belonging to deceased individuals. Using a deceased person's Social Security Number is a long-standing identity theft method, and the screening is included with every verification we run.
